I feel like I need to address recent happenings in the community, so here goes.
SammyServers has been my baby for a very long time now. I have always been a major part of it, either by being a donating admin myself (6 years or so ago), or working my way up to co-owning and then inheriting the community for my own. It's been my second home for as long as I can remember, and I've loved every single minute of it, from the time I was in-game, jumping into little grates in zm_crocodile, or blowing stuff in gmod, or the likely many months of my time I've spent out of game developing, maintaining, or updating the servers. It's all been great.
I'll address various things below, so I apologise if the post feels slightly disjointed.
Some of my fondest memories include:
and some rather awesome nostalgic threads:viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6552

<- best forum feature I coded togetherviewtopic.php?f=38&t=7911
<- fantastic addition to SSviewtopic.php?f=50&t=6381
<- one of my favourite projects I've worked onviewtopic.php?f=68&t=3018
<- another great projectviewtopic.php?f=23&t=1892
<- see belowviewtopic.php?f=23&t=8919
<- this and the above few threads just show how many things we've added or changed based on community feedback
but there's so many more memories, and hopefully there'll be even more!
There's lots of things that I've done in SS, and I'm not without regrets, but those are minor in relation to everything we've done and accomplished together. My biggest regret, by far though, is opening TeamSpeak. Whilst it allowed people to socialise on a much easier and personal level, it could never be fully policed like the forums and servers, and thus, it quickly turned into an environment that newer players didn't like or enjoy, and simply avoided, and so it was generally populate by a few elitist individuals who felt they had some hold over the community. The way some of our staff and server admins treated people in there was absolutely ridiculous, and that ultimately led to the downfall in popularity of the servers. Of course, there were many other small things that contributed to this, but ultimately, the community caused it's own downfall, and the majority of those involved don't even realise the harm they've caused.
Removing Indigo I feel was still the best solution to the problems at the time. Whilst of course sometimes I missed the assistance, and the usefulness of having someone else who knew our setup as well as I did, I feel that things would have diminished even faster if she had been kept around. I'm not going to insult someone when they're gone, so that's all I'll say about that.
Up until this point, SammyServers has been a community led by individual(s), who hosted servers from funds donated by the community, and that has worked well for >5 years. Very shortly, things are going to change. The future of SammyServers is in the community's hands. The community is more than welcome to start up servers using our name, and advertising our website (assuming contacting me first). @MaldorLevr has started up the first server with our name which you can find on the portal and in the general servers list to the left.
The server box will shut down as soon as I've exhausted all funds we have left. I accumulated quite some excess funds which have kept the box alive for over a year. (If someone has a better solution for exhausting the $100 or so we have left, please let me know). The website will likely never go down for as long as I'm alive, as I'm the kind of guy who'll always have server hardware knocking about.
At this point, I'd like to thank each and everyone one of you for making the community what it is today. The community isn't dead, and hopefully it will continue growing.
Let's make 2013 the best year yet!
