(To minimize risk of losing work this will be posted in sections and then combined, the additional posts then being removed)

At the center of all of your gaming activities is your system. Whether it is an Xbox or a Playstation or (God forbid) a Wii it is absolutely integral to your capability to game. The PC is different from these systems in that it is customizable in many situations. The exception to this is if you've got a laptop or a small purpose-built and pre-built system. However a PC is also a deal more complicated than a gaming console and, usually, a fair deal more expensive. Lately several people have taken to building their own machines or upgrading existing ones, thus displaying a need for easily accessible instruction and guidance. This guide will seek to introduce you to the parts of a gaming machine, what the information means on each part of the PC, and what you need to consider when assessing or building your machine. Also, don't expect you'll get a tower like the one pictured because that is a Thermaltake Level 10 and it costs $800 US.

NOTE: This is a guide, not a be-all end-all instruction set. If you are considering a new system do not hesitate to seek further guidance as the world of computer hardware and drivers is an ever shifting one. Feel free to contact me in any way you see fit if you require assistance at some point. First of all let's look at the parts of a computer and what they do.

In conclusion, the best thing you can do when building a new computer is to educate yourself. In that time you want to talk to people who know what they are doing and you want to take your time, building exactly what you want out of your rig until you have something wonderful and very personal to you. Take pride in your machine and it will reward you with many hours of intense and beautiful gaming hours that the poor people of the console world have never ever seen.

If you need help or have questions feel free to comment in the article, message me on the forums, or contact me through steam. I really don't mind answering questions and helping out with new builds. Thanks for reading and good luck.

I also now have a semi-regular article where I talk about getting the most out of what you have, new hardware, and games. Check it out https://sammyservers.com/forums/viewtop ... 819#p97150

I have no idea why those spoilers are repeating. Least they are for me. There's nothing in the message that would make that happen.

Seriously I can't figure out what's wrong with those extra spoilers.

This is what I'm seeing, BTW. Versus the other image which is what I should be seeing.

Cherry is working on the issue. The information still repeats and sort of jumbles at one point.

Cherry mended it.

Thanks for the support and comments, people. I'm thinking about doing a general computer hardware update / game graphics options once a month or so. Ironing out the details mentally right now but I'm planning on largely talking about how to keep your performance up easily with the hardware you have and how to tune the settings in games to get maximum performance and looks. Not going to add them here, but I might make a new article for it or just do an off-topic thing, depending on how in-depth I go. How would you guys feel about this?

For example, I'd look at the new GTX 660 Ti and it's limited memory bus but how you can get around issues like that in games if you have a older or slower card by using different resolutions and levels of AA and stuff.

EDIT: Gonna ask in the rubbish bin, too.

I think that'd be great.

It would really help people such as myself who don't really know what does what in the graphics/video settings and how the settings affect performance.

However, I wouldn't create another article unless you go really in-depth. It would be fine as another section.

I dunno. Think I'd create a new article and just add a section to that each month rather than clog up this guide. I'd set the article as a perma-WIP though.

-------------- Wed Aug 22, 2012 8:34 am --------------

Also, Siamese made me realize something I left out of the video card section when he told me that he had his monitor plugged into a spot on his computer which I recognized as being the motherboard and not the video card so I'm going to updating that section now.

*Addition complete under the 'Components - Video Cards' section.
